What started out as a televised talent competition in the United Kingdom, called Pop
Idol, has grown into a worldwide phenomenon that has launched the mega-successful
careers of multiple recording artists throughout the world.
    The Worldwide Phenomenon Continues
In January 2005, a record number of view-
ers tuned in to The Fox Television Network
for the season premier of American Idol
Season 4, immediately making it the #1
most watched show on TV with 33.5 mil-
lion viewers! For Season 4, the producers
added a few twists to make the competi-
tion even more exciting, not just for the
participants, but for the viewers as well.
Ruben Studdard (Season 2 winner), Clay
    Aiken (Season 2 runner-up), Fantasia
Barrino (Season 3 winner), and Diana
    DeGarmo (Season 3 runner-up), a brand-
new pop star was in the making as the
    American Idol4 season got underway.
    It’s A Worldwide
    Phenomenon
In addition to American Idol, there are
currently 30 versions of the show in pro-
duction throughout the world. In almost
every country where a version of Idol
airs, it’s typically the #1-rated television
    show. Plus, television viewers worldwide
also get to watch the American Idol
    competition unfold.
Of course, Simon Cowell continued to offer
his often harsh criticisms, while viewers
voted for their favorite contestants. This
season, however, the age limit for partici-
pants changed and the process for
narrowing down the pool of contestants
was different. More than 100,000 people
auditioned for American Idol4, yet after
several rounds of grueling auditions, the
    number of contestants was ultimately
    reduced to just 24 hopefuls.
So, if you happen to be vacationing in
Australia, for example, chances are you’ll
be able to catch Australian Idolas well as
American Idol. Other versions of the show
include Pop Idol(in the United Kingdom),
Canadian Idol, Greece’s Super Idol, Singapore
Idol, South Africa Idol, and Germany’s
    Deutschland Sucht Den Superstar.
From there, it became a “guys-versus-
    girls” competition, as additional contest-
ants were voted off the show by America's
TV viewers. By mid-March 2005, America
got its first peek at the Top 12 contestants
and began deciding whom their next
    American Idol would ultimately be.
Following in the incredibly successful foot-
steps of Kelly Clarkson (Season 1 winner),
